Overview

New Cathay Cafe Penang, located at 425 Jalan Burma in the heart of George Town, is a timeless coffee shop that skillfully blends Penang’s diverse culinary heritage with a cozy, local vibe. Opening early in the day and wrapping up by midday, it caters mainly to breakfast and brunch seekers, locals, and travelers eager to experience authentic, flavorful Malaysian street food in a laid-back environment.

The menu here is a mosaic of Penang favorites, centering around rich, comforting noodle dishes like the beloved Hokkien Mee Prawn Noodles and the aromatic White Curry Noodle, which has been repeatedly praised for its soul-soothing broth. Equally compelling are the lighter, snack-style options such as the crispy Popiah—and particularly the Seaweed Crispy Popiah—which has gained a near-cult following among regulars for its addictive crunch and fresh, vibrant flavors. This signature item stands out as more than just a snack; it’s a local treasure that offers a satisfying contrast to the more robust noodle plates.

Breakfast at New Cathay Cafe transcends the typical coffee shop experience. Whether it’s the fluffy pancakes drenched in syrup and topped with fresh fruit or the classic Roti Egg & Sugar, each dish feels thoughtfully prepared to evoke comfort and nostalgia. The atmosphere reflects early George Town mornings—bustling yet inviting, it’s a favored spot to refuel after a jog or before exploring the city’s heritage streets.

One consistent highlight across reviews is the balance of flavors and textures, such as the crispy yet delicate Popiah and the rich, hearty curries that speak to Penang's multicultural influences. While service tends to be friendly and prompt, the space may fill quickly, given its popularity and limited parking, which is a small challenge but hardly detracts from the overall experience.

New Cathay Cafe is perfect for families, solo travelers, and anyone eager to sample both classic and lesser-known Penang street dishes in one place. Its mix of noodle specialties, handmade snacks, and robust coffee shop classics positions it as a must-visit destination for those wanting to immerse themselves in the true flavors of Penang, all within an authentic local setting that feels like a warm morning welcome home.

I love coming here after my morning jog at the Botanical Garden! Personally, I'm a big fan of their Lam Mee and Crispy Popiah. I usually go for both the Original and Seaweed Crispy Popiah — they’re super crispy and flavorful! My kids love them too, so I often mix both types in one box to share. The other food here is also delicious. The only downside is the parking — it can be a bit tricky to find a spot, so you’ll need a little luck. But definitely worth it for the food!

I had my first meal at the New Cathay Cafe after I touched down Penang early in the morning. The place was full of people! I personally tried White Curry Noodle and Dry Hakka Pan Mee. White Curry Noodle to me was the best!! The broth was flavourful. Each spoonful of noodles tasted absolutely divine and made me feel so much at home! Hakka Pan Mee was so so to me. Service by the lady was great nonetheless! Shortly after, I was recommended by a kind aunty sitting next to me to try popiah at the "Crispy Popiah" stall. I tried both versions and I love the salad seaweed one! The popiah(s) are crispy and addictive. Definitely a must try! On another note, I was actually hoping to try the Apam as well but it was not open although I came back another day. Hope to try it someday! :)

I love dry popiah and not the typical Penang's wet ones and have been looking for dry ones for 10 years and at last I found it. This crispy seaweed popiah is one more notch, it's heavenly yummy. Serious people. You've got to try them. I have it takeaway and added Lingham's garlic chilli sauce once home, it's WOW! Definitely coming back for more.

Another stubble in my penang trip 2025, wandering around pulau tikus. My childhood memories of nice food, how to find, just drive around slowly tikus and lookout . Saw this place. An important note - this place open at 6.30 and close by 12.30pm . Just made it in time to order the curry mee . Amazing curry mee, best even to my kids. Next is popiah stall, one in front. Superb popiah.

We originally planned to visit another kopitiam, but it was closed — so we ended up here instead and were pleasantly surprised. Almost everything we ordered turned out great, except the wanton mee, which didn’t quite suit our taste.

New Cathay Cafe is a hawker food court. There were too many to choose from, we tried: Laksa curry mee - creamy white soup (not too thick), yellow noodle, topped with deep fried tofu, pig's blood cubes, crispy pork, cilantro & their special laksa paste. The dimsum: shau mai, corn pao and cheong fan drizzled with sweet hoisin sauce. All so yummy & satisfied our palates. Recommended for an easy breakfast & lunch options.

All the foods we tried are superb! It has been our favourite breakfast place. Hokkien mee, white curry noodle, Jawa mee, char kuey teow, and it explains why it is always full house here. Apam appears to be one of the best business stall until they forgot our order.
